Kent ISD- Jeff Anderson Presentation on Writing Revisions

Teachers Learn to Spark Pizzazz into Student Writing

biopicAnderson2010“When students talk about their ideas for writing, they often exhibit spark, personality, and pizzazz, expressing interesting ideas fearlessly and creatively. Yet the writing they submit lacks this same enthusiasm and originality. They have the ideas, but what happens between that talk and the written draft?” (Anderson, Jeff, and Deborah Dean. Revision Decisions: Talking through Sentences and beyond. Stenhouse Publishers, 2014. Print.)

Grammar had never been a topic we looked forward to teaching….until Jeff Anderson made it a topic we LOVE to teach with Mechanically Inclined and Everyday Editing. Now, Jeff and Deborah Dean have collaborated to take the agony and frustration out of teaching revision with Revision Decisions (published October 2014).

“The space between ideas and words making it to paper is part of the problem.” (Anderson) We need to know how to help students make the leap from vivid ideas to paper.

Jeff Anderson will be sharing his thinking about teaching students that “True writers revise,” and strategies for implementing it in classrooms with educators at Kent ISD on December 3rd (Grades 4-6) and December 4th (Grades 7-12).
