“Young people who had mentors report setting higher educational goals and are more likely to attend college than those without mentors,” according to “The Mentoring Effect”, a January 2014 report from The National Mentoring Partnership.
Kent ISD’s Career Readiness Department is excited to announce that the student registration for Groundhog Shadow Day 2017 opens on December 1 (click here to register). This program will run on February 2, from 9:00 am -2:00 pm and will be open to all Kent County students grades 9-12 that register.
What is Groundhog Shadow Day?
Groundhog Shadow Day is modeled after ‘Take your child to work day’, except mentors have been recruited from all around Kent County and are excited to show off their industries to OTHER people’s children!
The goal of this program is to give students an opportunity to explore their future career by meeting with mentors currently employed in a field that interests them. Mentoring is an extremely important aspect for students to find future success.
Why is this opportunity important for students?
Educators everywhere strive to situate their students to achieve post-secondary success, and we know that this is highly valued in Kent County as our Kent Intermediate Superintendent Association (KISA) goal #4 asserts that all students will be college and career ready at the end of their high school careers. This program hopes to make the goal of encouraging job shadows that many of our districts hold, more easily achievable.
Groundhog Shadow Day offers a chance for students to supplement the learning that happens at school with real world relevancy. They will expand their world view by interacting with an industry, workplace, organization that might have been completely unknown to them before. Even if students don’t identify their ‘dream job’ on GSD they will certainly have the chance to hear about career options, training pathways, and interact with a new group of professionals who want to see them discover success.
What businesses will offer opportunities to students this year?
