“Personalized learning is intended to facilitate the academic success of each student by first determining the learning needs, interests, and aspirations of individual students, and then providing learning experiences that are customized—to a greater or lesser extent—for each student. To accomplish this goal, schools, teachers, guidance counselors, and other educational specialists may employ a wide variety of educational methods, from intentionally cultivating strong and trusting student-adult relationships to modifying assignments and instructional strategies in the classroom to entirely redesigning the ways in which students are grouped and taught in a school.” (Glossary of Education Reform, 5/14/15)

In November 2015, Public Act 173 was signed into law, providing important clarity to the ongoing policy discussions about the direction of educator evaluations in Michigan. Implementing Michigan’s educator evaluation law with fidelity is a key strategy in our efforts to see Michigan become a top ten education state within the next ten years. Educator evaluations are implicitly linked to MDE’s Strategic Goal #3, to “develop, support, and sustain a high-quality, prepared, and collaborative education workforce.” (MDE Educator Evaluation Website)
There have been a lot of discussions lately focused on educator evaluation. Many of the requirements took effect in the 2015-16 school year. This year, school boards must adopt a teacher evaluation and administrator evaluation system. New school standards and a focus on project-based learning means investments are needed for equipment and materials to help bring learning to life. In some classrooms, even the basics of education are in short supply.
“Teachers spent an average of $487 out-of-pocket to purchase items for their classrooms during the 2015 – 2016 school year — only a slight $3 decrease since last year. The number of teachers who spent $200 or more increased 6% over the previous year to 77%. Did you know that new teachers in Michigan are required to have 15 days of professional development in their first three years of teaching?
It’s true. And, this 15 days of professional development is in addition to their district provided professional development (DPPD).
Many districts do not have the funding to provide a program that supports this requirement and often ask new teachers to find their own professional development, which can also be costly to the district.
